Red, Green, White, Green, Red, Red, White

Today, I discovered that a new Puffy single, R.G.W., is out, and it's an Xmas song, to boot. I'm liking this much more than some of the recent stuff they've done with Butch Walker. From what I've read, they worked with Tamio Okuda on this, which is a nice change. I really love the Beatles moment when they sing "Love, love, love." The video is kinda cute, too.

Decadeology: It's the place you want to be

Another post about my favorite songs of the decade. It was the summer of 2003, I was listening to Jellyfish's Spilt Milk, which is one of my all time favorite albums, and a great summer album, to boot. I found myself wondering what was going on with the Jellyfish guys, since they had split up in 1994, about a year after the release of Spilt Milk. I remember finding a page that said Andy Sturmer was writing and producing for a Japanese pop group called Puffy (known as Puffy AmiYumi here in the states). Intrigued, I looked for something to download so I could check it out.

After a few false starts, I finally obtained a full copy of Nice., which was the latest release, and I was finally able to click the play button. The opening track, Planet Tokyo, blindsided me the way that Scott Stevens destroyed Eric Lindros. Seriously.

This album checked a bunch of different genres, but it didn't sound like cheesy ripoff. It sounded more like a joyous celebration of all things pop. The production was airtight and pristine. The voices of Ami and Yumi melded together in harmony so perfectly, you'd never guess that it was a talent contest that brought them together. Listening to Nice. is like being on a party bus made of cotton candy. If you took Nice. along with you on a fishing trip, you'd catch more fish than you could carry home because this album has hooks for days. Okay, that was really bad, but I think you get the point.

This was the album that got me hooked into Jpop. Like the lyrics in Planet Tokyo said, "Planet Tokyo, it's the place you want to be, tonight." Yeah, I wanted to be there.

Happy Birthday

I'm kind of a completist nerd and I don't really have a problem with it. So of course, I went and ordered the new PUFFY b-sides compilation, Puffy AmiYumi X PUFFY, even though I already had most of the songs on the disc. Not such a big deal, right? I didn't even balk at the big price tag on the disc even though it was kinda expensive. I didn't care that the cover is awful (my nephews could do a way better job). I think the thing that really ticked me off was that they included three "BONUS TRACKS!!", according to the sticker on the back. Two of them are the themes to the Hi Hi Puffy AmiYumi show, one "Spanish TV Mix" and one "Portuguese TV Mix", each about a minute long. MEH. The final "Bonus Track" is Ami and Yumi singing Happy Birthday to who the hell fucking knows. Maybe it'd be cool if they were able to do it Marilyn Monroe style or something, but you know that ain't gonna happen. It just comes off as so retarded. Who signed off on this? The girls? The label? It's just such cheap bullshit. I'd be perfectly happy if they didn't included these so-called bonus tracks. This is just stupid. It's like, what's the fucking point? Seriously. Hear for yourself.

How do you begin again?

Last week, the new PUFFY single finally arrived in my mailbox. I have to say, I'm not entirely taken with it. It's fine, but it doesn't jump out at me and make me want to listen to it over and over like some of their other tracks and records. That said, one of the b-sides, My Story (variation by agraph), caught my interest. I like the music on this track, but the vocals kinda clash with it. Maybe if they could have redone the vocals with something more low-key, sinister and sexy. I do like this idea, even if it's only a remix at this point.

I've been thinking lately that there are some artists who could use a change of pace, PUFFY being one of them. Don't get me wrong, I love the power pop stuff. I think, for example, that the association with Butch Walker isn't a great one. Last summer's Avril Lavigne-penned/Butch Walker-produced All Because of You single was a travesty. It's just time to move on from that sound. Either that or somehow talk Andy Sturmer into coming back.

I think, though, if they could reinvent themselves in a sort of an electronica mode, not necessarily subdued but not dance-y, maybe something whispery, it would be interesting even if it were not a success. You've already got the cash, you've already got fans; why not try?

You made my story

So, I'm waiting for my copy of the new PUFFY single to arrive. This one is already sounding much better than All Because of You. No Butch Walker, no Avril Lavigne = A GOOD THING. There, I said it. In the meantime, I have this video to hold me over until the CD is in my greedy little paws. The vid isn't great, but what can ya do?

Track 2

Yeah, the new Puffy single, All Because of You, is not so hot. The B-side, however, is great! I love it! Unfortunately, I don't know the title, but it doesn't matter. This one is written by Tamio Okuda (as opposed to the A-side which was written and produced by Avril Lavigne and Butch Walker). I think this is the sort of song where they really shine. Unlike the overproduced faux rawk of All Because of You, this track is light, carefree and sorta jangly, with hooks for days. Their voices really stand out. Check it.

All because of you

Oh, man. Usually I'd salivate at the prospect of a new PUFFY single, but I'm kinda afraid of this one. It's written by none other than Avril Lavigne and Butch Walker, the hit-making machine of whom we are all fond. So, I dunno...I'll probably pick it up because I love the PUFFY girls and I'm something of a completist geek. I wish they would at least have sung it in Japanese, then the lyrics might not sound so retarded. *SIGH*

Passing the torch

Check it out, I bought Puffy CDs, Nice and HiHi Puffy AmiYumi, as Christmas gifts for my nephews (10 and 8 years old). I hope they get completely addicted. My sister is gonna kill me. Woo hoo!

Puffy the Monster!

I'm gonna go see Puffy tomorrow night, at Slim's. I am really digging their new album, Honeycreeper, it seems more immediate to me than the previous one. It took me a while to get into Splurge. I kinda miss the Andy Sturmer production on this and the last album, though. Being a big Jellyfish fan, he was the reason I had heard of Puffy. That said, I still really enjoy Puffy, and I am quite stoked to check out the gig.

My favorite song so far is Youkai Puffy, I guess it's about a monster or a ghost. It's a bit long, clocking in at just over seven minutes, but there is dialog at the beginning which lasts for about two or three minutes. I didn't like the dialog at first, but the tones of their voices crack me up. The song itself is a barn-burner and it sounds like the band is having a blast.

Check out their G*p ad above, and test drive a new track below. Also, there are more tracks available on their myspXXX page. Honeycreeper is already out in Japan, with a US release coming in 2008. How's that for vague?

Skankin PUFFY

Okay, so my love of PUFFY is well documented. I picked up a new-ish single the other day; well, it's new to me. It's a collaboration with the Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra, I think it's called "Hazumu Rizumu" and I really like it. So check out the video and mp3 if you're so inclined.

New PUFFY single!

I'm not sure what it's called but it's pretty cool. Also included are covers of The Beatles' "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds" and ELO's "Don't Bring Me Down". I really like the ELO cover. "Lucy" is good but it has been done to death.
